Our AT Thru Hike
Our AT Thru Hike
How will we communicate with family and friends?
Blackberry Curve
We purchased a Blackberry Curve on eBay and found that it will meet many of our needs. The Curve is small and light at 4.3 ounces. Features include a cell phone, still camera, video recorder, notes (for journal writing), and Internet access so that we can occasionally upload entries to Trail Journals. The camera photo quality is surprisingly good!
Battery life can be greatly extended through disabling “broadcast” status. In this mode, the Blackberry won’t attempt to search for nearby cell towers. If kept unpowered, except for use, we expect to get at least seven days from one battery charge. We will also pack one extra charged battery (.5 oz.) and a lightweight recharging cord.
Trail Journals
Trail Journals (trailjournals.com) is a very popular website dedicated to providing backpacking journals from hiking trails from all over the world.
We will maintain an online journal, sent via he Blackberry shown above.
Our 2009 Trail Journals web site can be accessed here.
Cell Phone
Trail etiquette suggests that the use of cell phones and other technological devices be used discreetly, in consideration of hikers that desire a quiet wilderness” experience. We will carry a cell phone for safety reasons and to stay in touch with family and friends. It will be used, however, in a manner that is respectful to others.
