Henry Coe Park - hike to Poverty Flat

The Corral Trail meets up with Manzanita Road
On the Corral Trail
On the Corral Trail
Cross roads
On the Springs Trail
Looking back from where I just walked
Tree alongside the Springs Trail
Still on the Springs Trail
Moving right along ...
Looking back again ...
Looking off to my right
I meet up with a couple of hikers walking
the other direction on the Springs Trail
On the road to Poverty Flat, indeed,
the road is named Poverty Flat Road
Dead tree on the side of the road
Moving on down towards Poverty Flat
A scene along the way to Poverty Flat
Ah, do my eyes deceive me?
I do believethat is poison oak!
Getting closer ...
A rather mossy water hole
Looking downstream ...
Looking upstream
I made it!  Poverty Flat!
And they have a little outhouse  After a
few hours on the trail, it came in handy!
Poverty Flat campsite.  I bet quite a few
backpackers have spent the night here.
The road continues to China Hole.
This is as far as I went today.
Heading back to the park headquarters
Close up of a campsite.
Some of the campsites are numbered.
Another campsite
A manzanita bush by a campsite.
Yet another campsite at Poverty Flat.
Heading on back to
the park headquarters
Some sort of fungus on that tree I guess,
On the Forest Trail.
Looking back on the Forest Trail
from where I just walked.
Heading onward ...
A rather bizarre looking tree
Looking back again on the Forest Trail
The end of the Forest Trail and apparently
of my camera batteries too.  They’re dead!

I took a trip to Henry Coe Park for a bit of hiking today, Saturday, Oct 7, 2006.  The weather was spectacular and the temperature was ideal for hiking, in the low 70’s.  The fall Tarantula Fest and Barbecue was scheduled for today and given the crowds, I had to park at the first lot at the park entrance, about 1/2 mile from the park headquarters.
I started my hike from the park headquarters at about 1 PM, walking on the Corral Trail at which point my photographic journal begins.
The Corral Trail links up with the Springs Trail and from there, I took the Poverty Flat Road down to the Poverty Flat campsite.   The Poverty Flat Road descends about 1300 to 1400 feet down to the campsites.  It wasn’t too bad going down but climbing back out up that steep road was murder!  I really got a workout and I would not recommend it for anyone unprepared for a strenuous hike.  I’m just glad I did it on a cool day.  If it had been hot, I don’t know if I could have made it.
Heading back, I eventually made it back up to the junction of the Forest Trail.  The  Forest Trail was an easy walk and has some pretty sites along the way and it lead me back to the point where I caught the Corral Trail again to return to the park headquarters.
Total hike time:  about 4 hours
Total distance hiked:  about 8 miles (including the round trip walk from the parking area)
Total water consumed:  about 3 liters
