Cape Rose Toy Poodles
Books, Movies, How-to Videos
Several books can be considered essential reading for those who enjoy--or aspire to enjoy--a toy poodle or, in fact, any variety of poodle. We review several recommended books below.
There are so many other media available today to help you enjoy life with your toy poodle. These include grooming videos and even movies featuring dogs. We include some of our favorites on this page.

Dr. Ackerman’s Book of Poodles
by Lowell Ackerman, D.V.M.
If anyone knows dogs, it’s Dr. Ackerman who is affiliated with the Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine in Massachusetts. Dr. Ackerman’s book about poodles is engaging, thorough, and an easy read. The book is replete with great color photos. Perhaps because he is a veterinarian, Dr. Ackerman’s chapter “Medical Problems” is a must-read for any prospective poodle owner.
The Poodle Owners' Medical Manual
by Robert M. Brown, D.V.M.
Everyone should own at least one home health guide for their pet. Poodle owners are no exception. The dozen chapters in this guide cover medical conditions relating to every major body system, in all three varieties of poodles. In addition, there are chapters on anesthesia, surgery, and nutrition. The Suggested Veterinary Visits page is like a routine maintenance checklist for your poodle. The book is especially well-indexed, making it easy to learn more about almost any aspect of your poodle's health.
A New Owner’s Guide to Poodles
by Charlotte Schwartz
If you buy just one book for your poodle library, this is arguably the best. Chapters cover everything from history of the poodle to traveling with your pet. Special chapters are devoted to understanding the poodle's personality as well as selecting and grooming your poodle. You can also learn more about poodle health care, dental care, nutrition, and training, including house training. This wonderful guide is filled with full-color photographs showing the three poodle varieties in all their glory.
Dogs Behaving Badly
by Dr. Nicholas Dodman
Among our favorite pet experts is Dr. Nicholas Dodman, a pet behavioral specialist at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Dodman has appeared on 20/20, Good Morning America, the Today show, CNN Headline News, National Public Radio, and The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Several years ago when Cindy--the Alpha Dog at TOYPOODLES.COM--was a writer for PetCare News, she had the great pleasure of interviewing Dr. Dodman. What an absolutely engaging person he is! His books are written with gentle humor and we endorse them without reservation.
