Community Involvement

Besides enjoying toy poodles, I like playing and restoring clarinets. As an amateur clarinetist I have made music with several community ensembles including the Westerly Band and the Wakefield Concert Band.

More than a decade ago I helped to design the web site for The 1 of 52 Hunger Network. This initiative was the brain-child of Stephen M. Maciel who envisioned, long before the current economic crisis, a nationwide network of artists and musicians fighting hunger. To this day, artists and musicians all over the country raise awareness, funds, and nonperishable food for those in need.

Education by Degrees

I earned a Ph.D. from the Department of Food Science, Technology, Nutrition & Dietetics at the University of Rhode Island. For my dissertation, I developed a process to preserve seafood with the enzyme system glucose oxidase/catalase (Field, C.E., Pivarnic, L.F., Barnett, S.M., Rand, A.G., 1986. Utilization of glucose oxidase for extending the shelf life of fish. J. Food Sci. 51, 66 – 70).

Previously, I had spent several years in medical research specializing in the gastrointestinal conditions Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis.

I also hold a Master’s degree in botany from the University of Rhode Island. My major professor is horsetails (Equisetum spp.) expert Richard L. Hauke, author of “Vignettes from the History of Plant Morphology”.

Let me know how I can help you with your communications project.

During my 25-year communications career I was honored to have worked with many wonderful people, including Avrahm “Abe” Galper, former principal clarinetist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. I helped Abe publish several clarinet books before he died.

Several years earlier, The Clarinet, the official publication of the International Clarinet Association, asked me to write Abe’s 80th birthday tribute (Vol. 28/4 (September 2001).

I currently do freelance work for the RI Catholic, our Diocesan newspaper.

Do you need a brochure? Flyer? Newsletter? Could your article, web site, or book benefit from professional editing? If so, please contact me by email. Or visit my web site Cynthia E. Field Communications.

Science Publications

While working with Abe was a dream come true for an amateur clarinet player like me, the main focus of my communications career has been science and technology. Since 1982 I have published hundreds of articles in computer magazines as well as in journals like PetCare News.

In the early 1990s, I wrote one of the very first articles about the Internet - at a time when you dialed the phone manually and pressed a button on a 110-baud modem connected to an Apple II computer to connect to Compuserve. How cool is that?

Web Site Design

In addition to designing and writing the Cape Rose Toy Poodles web site, I have also designed other web sites including Florence Morning Star Kennel, a site devoted to Siberian huskies,  Clarinets • Resource for Amateur Musicians, and Wakefield Concert Band.

Other Gigs

For the past year I designed and edited the weekly eNews of the Alternative Food Cooperative, a local organic and natural foods store. I also designed the Co-op’s brochure, label templates, signs, and other publications.

I more recently learned to use Constant Contact, an email marketing program suitable for virtually any small business.

I have contributed to tasteforlife.com. Read my article about safe pet food storage.

For my Ph.D.

I designed an enzymatic system to preserve fish.
