The Airstream
The Airstream
As most know I finally bought an Airstream last year. I’ve wanted one for what seems like an eternity. Airstreams were originally made famous by Wally Biam, who back in the 50’s led Airstream caravans on around the world adventures (see photos here). Today, they still represent a slice of Americana known all over the world as the Silver Bullet.
When I bought it, I immediately took off and spent about three months last year living in it throughout the eastern US. This included almost six weeks traveling with my buds Paul and Heidi and their two girls through the northeast USA (they were in my step dad’s old RV). It’s also where, on top of a North Carolina mountain, I re-drew my plans to travel around the world on my motorcycle, a goal I realized this year.
Personally, I never knew I’d have so much fun with it or that it would attract so much attention when I traveled. People take photos of it, chat with me about it, and while stopped at a light in Burlington Vermont a very attractive woman even yelled across to me to take her with me. Silly me, I didn’t. Next time, however, I’m prepared to deal with my new found fame:-)
Yes, in just a short time the AIrstream has become a classy home away from home. A studio apartment on wheels, that can be placed anywhere, at any time. The ideal get away whether it’s on the side of a lake, ocean or mountain.
There’s also a huge AIrstream following including many a singer and celeb, traveler and live aboard. Read this article from the Nov. 2008 Architectural Digest.
Life in an Airstream
"To lead caravans wherever the four winds blow... over twinkling boulevards, across trackless deserts... to the traveled and untraveled corners of the earth." - Wally Byam, Founder of Airstream
