Sailing the Pacific

“Survivor” Tall Ship

San Diego to New Zealand by Top’sl Schooner

On August 21, 2005,  I joined the crew of the 66 foot R. Tucker Thompson in San Diego for a 7,500 mile adventure sail across the Pacific Ocean to the Tucker’s home port of Russell, New Zealand.  Along the way we passed through the Marquesas Islands, the Tuamotus, the Society Islands (Tahiti, Moorea), the Cook Islands and the oft times infamous Minerva reef.  We landed in New Zealand at 4 AM one night at the end of October, freezing our butts off and proud of our accomplishment.
