Haiku
with Terry Ann Carter
MANAGING STRESS IN A COMPLEX WORLD:
DISCOVERING THE SIMPLE BEAUTY OF HAIKU POETRY

next workshop to be scheduled for autumn in 2008
Location will be at our studio, Jaku Gan Sai - Tranquil Rock Studio, 2712 Marie street, Ottawa

In her book No Time: Stress and the Crisis of Modern Life, Canadian
academic Heather Menzies states, "there is a crisis of meaning and
accountability" that threatens to paralyze society. She sees signs of it
everywhere: depression, stress, physical and emotional burnout and attention deficit disorders. "The unanswered e-mails, phone calls, voice mails, deadlines -- create a miniature Tower of Babel in people's heads --
a confusion of personal and business priorities, voices and digital bits and pieces." She asks, "Are there any meaningful encounters in such a quick moving world?"

antidote: Haiku Poetry

haiku poetry can be an antidote for the stress of our post modern culture
-- allowing us to step off the spinning wheel, to stop and breathe deeply and slowly. To note the birth and death of each moment, to slow down, to see.

Join Terry Ann Carter in an interactive haiku poetry workshop

cost: between $40,- to $60,- CDN / 3-4 hour workshop;
materials included in price:
handout on haiku history, style, and techniques
several small haiku (hand designed) examples
one haiku magazine

Terry Ann Carter has composed haiku in the rain forests of British Columbia, the Peruvian mountains, and Tokyo Central Station.  She participated in the Basho festival, Ueno, Japan, in 2004, and placed first in the haiku competition sponsored by the Cherry Blossom Festival in Vancouver (2007).  Her poems have been published in haiku journals around the world and she has won several international awards. In 2001 she co-founded kado Ottawa, a local haiku group that fosters the appreciation of haiku and related Japanese literary forms.  She is Vice President of Haiku Canada.
We attended two workshops with her last year, and consider ourselves very fortunate to be able to enjoy her fine teachings and her presence at our studio.
