Born into a musical family in Oklahoma City in 1953, Rath started playing bassoon and drums in 1963 in Greenfield (WI). He studied in the Milwaukee Public School Music Program through high school and then enrolled in the Bachelor of Music Education degree at Lawrence University (Appleton, WI) Conservatory of Music in 1971. He passed the Sophomore Exam in the Freshman year and was the first to perform a Lecture Jury at the Conservatory, in his Sophomore year. He also had a very fine woodwind quintet to play in! (Becky Voights, Carl, Debbie Bush, Karen Lundgren, and Miles Ishigaki)
Rath continued to study and perform on bassoon and percussion in recitals and ensembles throughout his studies. A winner of the Lawrence University Concerto Competition in 1974-75 (Mozart Concerto, K. 191, I; Joel Rosenberg, cond), he graduated with Distinction in Performance in 1975. He performed in the top woodwind quintet in the University of Milwaukee Chamber Music Program in the summer before enrolling at The University of Denver Lamont School of Music in Fall, 1975.

At Denver, Rath played in the Colorado Fusion Orchestra that performed the premiere of Pat Williams’ An American Concerto in 1976 and toured with the DU Symphony Orchestra (Vincent C. LaGuardia, cond) performing at the biennial conference of MENC and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, representing the State of Colorado for the Bicentennial.

He played percussion and Principal Bassoon in the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Orchestra. Rath was Principal Bassoonist in the Fox Valley (WI; Istvan Jaray & Richard Watson, conds) Symphony Orchestra and the Oshkosh Symphony (Henry Pensis, cond). He conducted the Lawrence University Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, with Green Bay Packer cornerback Johnny Gray, as narrator. In 1980-81, Rath was named Director of Band at Ripon (WI) College.

In 1981, Rath was appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Oklahoma and played bassoon in the Oklahoma Woodwind Quintet, which made its Carnegie Hall Debut in 1985. They released the CD A Christmas Delight, in 1991, which has become a staple on radio programming in the U.S. during the holiday season. In 1985, he was a Quarter-Finalist in the prestigious Concert Artists Competition in New York.

Carl Rath continues to perform at the Red Lodge (MT) Music Festival, since 1980, and performed at the 2003 Buenos Aires Music Festival. Mr. Rath was Principal Bassoon with Classical Music Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria for 17 summers and was solo artist three times with the Festival orchestra in several performances of the Mozart Concerto (K. 191) and the Haydn Sinfonie Concertante in Bb. His live performances from Red Lodge and the Classical Music Festival have been broadcast in Europe and on NPR in the U.S. Since 1979, he has appeared as concerto soloists with numerous orchestras and wind ensembles. In 1997, he was soloist in the Vivaldi Concerto in g minor for Oboe and Bassoon with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic on their Classics Concert Series (Joel Levine, cond). As a guest artist, he has been soloist with bands and orchestras in the U.S.

As a chamber musician, Rath has enjoyed numerous celebrated performances in the U.S., Argentina, Austria, China, Hungary, and England. Carl Rath can be heard on three CDs: Moosmann Artists Sampler Disc, Moosmann Live (live performances from the 2002 IDRS conference in Banff, Canada--2002), and A Christmas Delight (Integra Music Group). The latter also includes two of Rath's Woodwind Quintet arrangements.

He plays a Moosmann 222A bassoon and is a founding member of the International Bassoon Quartet. He has been featured in solo and ensemble concerts at the International Double Reed Society on several occasions beginning in 1993. His principal teachers have been Fred Schroeder, Stephen Basson, Stan Scheller, and Wil Roberts.

Rath has been the Principal Bassoonist in the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra since 1993.
