Roger Schmodger

While I harbored semi-secret desires to see Roger return to wear a Sox uni, I have no problem with the Sox not opening their ’secret vault’. They don’t have the over-riding need for another starter. The Yanks on the other hand are in serious need.
Let King George do his regular thing, and spend like a drunken sailor. A lot of good it has done him over the last 7 years.
Another thing that the Yankees ought to consider is how effective Roger will be for $5+ million a month. Despite his ancient body, Roger has posted ERAs below 3 in each of his 3 years in Houston. But lets face it, in the National League you only have to face 8 batters. Returning to the AL could very well take some adjustment. Just ask Josh Beckett. The last time Roger had a sub-3 ERA in the AL was 1998.
Well, at least this might make people pay attention to the Sox-Yanks games…. ;-)
Bill Simmons, who unlike me has for years despised the thought of Roger ever returning to the Sox, has his ten reasons (scroll halfway down) why he is glad about the outcome.  An excerpt that echoes my sentiment:
Honestly? I don't think Clemens will be that good for the Yanks. He turns 45 in August and has
been pitching in an inferior hitting league for the past few years. Physically, it just doesn't add
up. He's defying the career paths of every other pitcher in the the history of baseball … I mean
even a freak of nature like Nolan Ryan started to break down in his mid-40s. How is Clemens
still chugging along? How? I just feel as though the odds of Clemens either breaking down or
becoming involved in a massive scandal seem to be much greater than the odds of him
continuing to be an elite pitcher. And if he stinks … it's going to be glorious. Just glorious.
As always, Simmons is worth reading the whole thing...
One thing that should concern Yankee fans is Roger’s lack of game stamina:
One aspect of Clemens’ arrival that might not be a boon for the New Yorkers (as NECN’s Mike
Giardi points out) is a recent inability to go deep into games and give an already over-worked
bullpen. In his last five starts last season he never went beyond six innings once and never
pitched eight innings in any of his 19 outings
The Yankee’s bullpen is swiss cheese, and Mariano Rivera just blew another game (now 1-3).  Despite how many big bats the Yanks have, does acquiring Clemens really get them anything if the middle and late relief continue to fritter it away?  Or will Clemens bring some magic Texas firewater with him that will rejuvenate the bullpen as well.  The Yankees fans had better hope so.
