Athens High School Track Renovation

Covington Flooring Company and Polytan technicians recently completed the installation of the new track surface at Athens High School in North Alabama.

The old shredded rubber black track had completely deteriorated to the point of oblivion and required substantial work to renovate. Head by architectural firm McKee & Associates of Montgomery, work was undertaken in the winter of 2009.

Following the removal of the old track by subcontractor Ross Environmental, Inc., a new layer of asphalt was required to provide a smooth and level surface for the new track system.

Upon curing of the asphalt cap, Polytan and Covington technicians installed the Polytan WS system over the entire expanse. Numerous challenges were addressed including the raising of all existing drains.

Barry Hamilton, Director of Operations for Athens City Schools, commented on how great the surface felt under his feet and legs. Barry was a former track coach and watched with great interest as the new track was installed.

Polytan WS is a paved in place basemat of special sized, black recycled rubber granules bound together with a polyurethane binder material formulated for this purpose. Installed above the basemat layer is a spray-applied mixture or terra cotta rubber granules bound together with matching polyurethane binder. Track lines are precision applied with quality paint to comply with AHSAA rules for track.
