About our Sunday services

Our first Sunday service, also known as a more traditional "Lord's Supper" or "Breaking of Bread" service, is called REMEMBER because we come to remember who Jesus Christ is and what He did. During the Passover meal (see Luke 22:14-19), Jesus broke bread and passed the bread a cup of wine to His disciples saying, "Do this in remembrance of Me." Cornerstone began in 1912 with a few families worshiping God by "breaking bread" together in a home, and we've been doing this ever since. We strive to model this service after the meetings of the early church as described in 1 Corinthians 11-14 in which various men read scripture, suggest a hymn or lead the group in prayer, all with the intent to focus on Christ and His sacrifice for us. REMEMBER is orderly yet without a prescribed structure or agenda and offers a chance to slow down and quietly reflect on Christ in a peaceful, contemplative atmosphere. At one point in the service we pass around the bread and cup, which represent Jesus' body and blood, and remember in reverent praise and thanksgiving how he gave both to save us. Anyone is welcome to attend REMEMBER, and those who have believed in Jesus Christ as their Savior are invited to take the bread and cup. The service concludes with an offering, announcements and prayer.

INQUIRE is a new addition to our Sunday morning schedule following our Remember service (except during the summer). It's basically Sunday school for all ages, where the entire church breaks up into smaller groups and studies the Bible and its principals in an informal environment. INQUIRE is an opportunity to do exactly that, to dig deeper into the teaching of God's word and discuss it with with others. Isaiah 8:19-20 puts it this way: "When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn." Kids 3 years old through 5th grade, junior high, and high school will have separate curriculums, while the adults will meet in three classrooms, all discussing the same topic. The goal is to foster fellowship, spiritual growth and discipleship in a casual and fun classroom environment. Bringing your own Bible is encouraged, and study guides (depending on the topic) are available to purchase but not required. Inquire is open to regular attenders and visitors alike. A staffed nursery is available for kids under three during Inquire and Connect.

CONNECT is our 10:30 service, which anyone is free to attend for an hour of contemporary worship music and a Biblical message applicable to everyday life. The atmosphere is decidedly more lively and celebratory, because in Christ we have reason to celebrate. Most sermons are given by our pastor/teacher John Ottley, but occasionally guest speakers are also invited. Special musicians, video, drama or other presentations also may be a part of this service designed to bring praise and glory to God and as we connect to Him in worship, to each other in community, and to His word through relevant preaching. On the first Sunday of every month we will also set aside part of the CONNECT service for a communion time, remembering the Lord's sacrifice on the cross by sharing the bread and juice. An offering bag is also passed around following this time. Giving is a form of worship, but we feel that it is primarily the responsibility of our regular attenders and committed members. Visitors are not expected to give money and shouldn't feel pressured to do so.
