Time Management Based on Priorities
I believe the most popular agenda item for my coaching sessions is time management. The question typically includes how can I find time for client development. My answer is you have to make time. If you don’t, you will never “find” it.
For each lawyer, making time will be different. As most lawyers I coach know, I made time for my writing and speaking on Saturdays and Sundays from 6AM to 9AM. I chose those times because I was up anyway and because neither Nancy nor Jill cared that I was not with them. I spent Saturday afternoons with Jill. We called it our father-daughter time.
Now, I have to admit that it was easier for me than it is for some of the lawyers I coach. After all, I believe it is easier for dads than it is for moms and Jill was an only child.
Long ago I read Stephen Covey’s book: “7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” The book included great ideas for time management based on priorities. Later I read a book he co-authored titled: “First Things First.” I also listened to CDs applying the principles of the book. If you are interested and I can find them I would be happy to let you borrow the CDs.
In the meantime, if you want to read a short book review of “First Things First” take a look at cordellparvin.com.
I also recommend that lawyers watch and listen to Christy Crider’s Webinar on time management. She has applied the First Things First principles in her own life and manages her time based on her top priorities. In the Webinar she shows you how to do it. If you are interested, send Joyce an email at jflo@cordellparvin.com and she will send you the link.
