As a reminder to our readers, our partnership with Dr. David Modry in the Mt. Kulal region (also near Lake Turkana) began earlier this year. Since that time, Dr. Modry has reported a 100% success rate in the first area treated with preventative rabies vaccinations in canines. Moreover, his innovative approach to the rabies epidemic in Kenya has gained the respect of tribal elders and governmental officials.

CNLI reps are looking into a possible trip to Kenya next summer to evaluate other needs of the area with Dr. Modry. There are a variety of areas to be assessed including overpopulation and biodiversity needs.

The pictures below depict the unique tribal group that CNLI works with. This tribe and it’s neighbors are preserving a way of life that is becoming more and more uncommon in the face of increased development and urbanization.

Click photos to enlarge.

In the next year, we will continue to develop our relationship with the town of Arbagona, and it’s surrounding villages for work with the Eden Projects.

Through the dedication of Ken Thayer from Timberview Free Methodist Church (Spokane, Washington), fifty Granny Smith apple trees were transported to Ethiopia this past week.

This didn’t come easy! The trees serve as a tangible initiative in Arbagona, Ethiopia, and will communicate to those in the town of Arbagona our desire to demonstrate reliable partnership. Ken was ready to leave Seattle on April 4th, but couldn’t because of complications with getting these trees transported through the airline. Though discouraged, he was determined to figure out an alternate way to transport them, and by the next week, Ken flew to Ethiopia with three carefully packed bags of apple trees. The trees finally arrived in the airport a day ago and are on their way with Ken and a few Ethiopian friends to the town of Arbagona. This will be a large step for Ken as he specifically represents the American-side of the Eden Projects to the leaders of this town.

In a few weeks, Ken will report to us what he learned while on his trip - from evaluating the land for reforestation, to considering how well the soil took to the apple trees.

We are initiating this process slowly and wisely to better secure a strong partnership with the people of Arbagona before we move at “full speed” on this project. This is something Ken will be able to confirm to us when he gets back. We look forward to hearing his assessment of the surrounding culture and resources.

Thank you for all your support. Please be praying about our partnership in this project.
