The Cluny Group was borne out of our involvement in a number of diverse activities in our region, each of these activities requiring a different identity.  As a means of simplifying things we introduced The Cluny Group.

The Cluny Group is based in Lilongwe, Malawi and run by Derek and Shannon Macpherson and comprises of Cluny Photographic Safaris, Cluny Hunting Safaris, Cluny Wildlife Trust and Cluny Lodge.

We have been operating our photographic safari business taking tourists around Malawi and Zambia  for the last ten years and have strived to ensure that our clients experience the best of the wildlife that this region has to offer.

Derek is a professional hunter and hunts in Tanzania and has in the past hunted in Mozambique.  Derek and the clients he has guided have enjoyed some successful and exciting adventures in these areas.

Cluny Wildlife Trust was born out of a lion capture project that we initiated in 1998.  A pride of lion were under persecution in the Mangochi Forest Reserve in the southern region of Malawi. By the time we were asked to help in the capture and relocation of these lion, seven out of a pride of twelve had either been shot or stoned.  In trying to raise the funds needed to capture the remaining pride we realised the need to operate as a transparent, non-profit, non-government organization and thus Cluny Wildlife Trust was established.  Today Cluny Wildlife Trust is contributing to our country and its people through projects initiated on Likoma Island in Lake Malawi.

In February 2007 Shannon’s parents, Bev and Marinus Taale immigrated to Malawi and are now running Cluny Lodge in Lilongwe.  Cluny Lodge is a seven bed guest house, operating on a bed and breakfast basis with self catering facilities on offer.

We are often asked where the name “Cluny” comes from?  “Cluny” is a family name, meaning meadow or field, which we have adopted as our company name.
