•Juan de Pareja from Metropolitan Museum of Art
Introduction

Painters often study the work of other artists, and it shows in their paintings. In this activity you will view paintings by European artists who lived in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. As you look at their paintings, you will see how these artists influenced each other.
In this activity you will become a "curator" as you collect and then display paintings for a gallery of 15th, 16th and 17th century art.
The Task
After you study the paintings and read the biographies of the artists featured in the web sites listed below, you will choose five artists and create a "gallery of art" of their paintings in the form of a poster or a brochure.
The Process: Exploring the Web, Creating a Product
Step 1: Listed below are web sites with paintings and biographies of famous 15th, 16th and 17th century artists. Look at the paintings and then choose your five favorite to put in your gallery of art. Once you have made your selections, click on each painting and then save the image.
(Note: To see a painting in full-frame, click on the thumbnail image of the painting.)
Step 2: Paintings in art galleries usually include short captions below or beside them that tell about the painting and the artist. As curator this is your job, so on notebook paper write the following information about each painting:
•Two or three lines describing the painting
•One paragraph of biographical information about the artist
Step 3: You are now ready to exhibit your paintings. Choose one of the following "gallery of art" projects:
Create a Poster
1. Print the five paintings. Arrange them on a piece of poster board.
2. For each painting, type or neatly print a caption that includes two or three lines describing the painting and one paragraph of biographical information about the artist.
3. Include a paragraph on the poster inviting your classmates to view the exhibit.
Create a Brochure
1. Using a word processing program to create a brochure. Place the paintings you saved in your brochure.
2. For each painting, include a caption that includes two or three lines describing the painting and one paragraph of biographical information about the artist.
3. Include a paragraph in the brochure inviting your classmates to view the exhibit.
-
4.Print your brochure.
