In April 2007, nearly 30 years since he last set foot in his homeland, Nabeel received an invitation to return to Iraq from the Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. It was a highly emotional and dangerous return. Both Nabeel’s past and his pro-democracy stance put him at risk. But he has ached for a chance to contribute to his country’s future, believing strongly that it is Iraq’s culture that must be re-ignited if it is to build a good future. He had several meetings with al-Maliki and other leading figures from across Iraq where he spoke about Iraq’s cultural and literary traditions.Since his people have been denied their own culture for close to 40 year there are now almost two generations of young Iraqis that have never experienced the magic of culture. Instead they have been schooled in the tyranny of oppression and endemic violence.
