Mountaineering skills course, Fly-in access.


This course is identical to the Mountaineering skills course above but takes advantage of helicopter access into the mountains to reduce the days required to cover the curriculum to 5. Students who have taken the Island Alpine Guides Rock 2 course or equivalent may sing up for only the 3 day fly-in mountain portion of the course.


Dates: July 26-27 (rock section) and  August 2-4 (mountain section), August 23-24 (rock section) and August 30 - September 1 (mountain section), September 27-28 (rock section) and October 4-6 (mountain section). Other dates available on request.


Price: $975 per person.


Included in the price: Instructor, return helicopter flights, use of rock shoes,

harness, helmet, ice axe, crampons and group technical gear.


Not included in the price: Transportation to and from starting point, food, tents and personal clothing and equipment (list supplied on booking). Transport, food and tenting logistics will be organized between participants and IAG. Optional catering of three meals per day can be provided by IAG for a cost of $40/person/day.


Introduction to Rock Climbing


Learn the basics of rock climbing in a safe and fun learning environment. Movement skills on rock, belaying, rappelling and simple anchor building are all covered in this one day course.

Price: $135/person


Included in the price: Instructor, use of rock shoes, harness, helmet and group technical gear.

Rock Two – the next level


Day one of this two day course is the Introduction to Rock Climbing course. Day two takes it to the next level by covering building of complex anchors using removable protection and advanced movement skills. On completion of this course students should feel comfortable going top roped climbing on their own. Students may sign up for only the second day if they have already completed Introduction to Rock Climbing or equivalent.

Learn to Lead on Rock


When you have done enough top roped climbing that you feel ready to start lead climbing there is no better way to get into leading safely than to learn to do safely from the start. Our three day learn to lead course covers everything you need to know to lead safe pitches from placement of protection and planning your ascents to station management and even some self rescue techniques. Even if you have started lead climbing already, instruction from qualified guides will get you leading in a consistent, safe and confidence inspiring manner.


Dates:July 5-6, August 16-17. Other dates available on request.


Price: $360 per person (3:1 max ratio)

Complete Mountaineering skills course


On this seven day course students learn all of the basics of mountaineering from movement on snow rock and ice to anchoring and belaying in all these mediums, glacier travel, route finding and much else. The first two days of the course cover all the basics on rock (see description of Rock 2) followed by five days in the mountains. Students who have taken the Island Alpine Guides Rock 2 course or equivalent may sign up for only the 5 day mountain portion of the course.

Rock Rescue Courses


Imagine yourself belaying a partner on a climb when a mishap befalls them and they are hanging on the other end of the rope, unable to do anything. If you do any multi pitch climbing, whether as a leader or a follower, in reality you could find yourself in this situation. If having the skills to manage these situations is of interest to you then our rock rescue courses are exactly what you need.


Rock Rescue One


On this one day course we cover all the basics of improvised self rescue from rescue anchors and station management to blocking and escaping belays and setting up raising and lowering systems.


Dates: July 26 & August 9


Price: $135/person


Included in the price: Instructor, use of rock shoes, harness, helmet and group technical gear.


Not included in the price: Transportation, food, accommodation and personal clothing and equipment (list supplied on booking). Transport, food and accommodation logistics will be organized between participants and IAG. Optional catering of three meals per day can be provided by IAG for a cost of $40/person/day.

Students are expected to bring a minimum of technical gear of their own namely 12 metres of 7mm cord, two identical non locking flat stock carabiners and 3 locking carabiners.



Rock Rescue Two


Day one of this course is the Rock Rescue One curriculum described above. On the second day we deal with more complicated scenarios with multiple lowers, rappels with victims, passing knots, rope ascending and other techniques used in multi pitch rescue.
