Counter-Intuitive NEWS

In 2004, while I was teaching broadcast at UBC, Global National News approached me with a novel idea: They wanted to produce a series of reports about the eroding freedoms of Canadians. It first struck me as a typical Canwest concept--taking a right-of-centre position on social issues. But then I saw it as an opportunity to practice what I’d always preached: counter-intuitive journalism, in which reporters explore issues from a point of view that is diametrically opposed to their personal beliefs. Here is the result: in one story, I even found myself making a case AGAINST gun control!
