These images are inspired by medieval & immigrant folk art including wall paintings, weavings and domestic utensils. I admire the work of folk artists who enhance daily life by making the ordinary, extraordinary. I am especially fond of the slightly awkward and very engaging figurative work of itinerant “old country” artists. It is these images that I have been studying.
There are many fine practitioners of rosemaling today and I do not attempt this art form. Rather I am exploring a rich mine of older and more archaic imagery that has had very little exposure. In researching images from the 1100’s to 1900, I have been continually delighted by work that seems to be, at once, both knowing and naïve.
