September 2007
Our home was on the 2007 Office of Sustainable Development’s “Build it Green” tour of new and remodeled homes. We have gone on past tours to see sustainable building practices first hand and found the experience invaluable in researching the construction of our own home so we welcomed the chance to volunteer. We did not think we would have many visitors as our home was by far the farthest stop out. However, to our surprise we had a steady stream of people all day asking questions about our home and sharing experiences about their own green projects. One of the highlights of the day was meeting Howard the structural engineer who made sure our house is structurally sound and will last for generations.
Michael, Jeff and Andrew of Green Hammer installed the timber frame that supports the second story. The tongue and groove FSC certified Douglas Fir sub floor was installed by framers Zane and Jerry. Our sub floor will not be covered by carpet or another material so unlike traditional construction it will be fully visible from the top and the bottom. Because much of the framing is visible, it took more time to construct but is worth the extra effort as it adds to its beauty and durability.
