Elementary Art & Essay Event

WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE?
Conserving our Earth’s Resources is this year’s topic designed especially for fourth and fifth grade classes
in the Indianapolis Metro Area.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
Choose either Question 1, 2, or 3 from the pages above
that best fits your curriculum. Discuss the issues and challenges of our growing transportation needs &
dependence on oil and brainstorm solutions.

Students write a short essay (two-three paragraphs, not to exceed 250 words) answering one of the key questions.
Students create a drawing that best illustrates their essay. Drawings can be done in either crayon, marker, or colored pencil. Submissions need to be on 8.5 X 11” white paper.
Please choose one essay entry and illustration per class to represent your group for consideration in judging.
Deadline for Art & Essay Submissions Postmarked by March 8, 2008

PRIZES
18 students who have their Essay & Art work selected will receive a $50 gift certificate. Their drawing and a portion of their Essay will be featured on the 2008 -2009 Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Calendar.

*This optional Videoconference and Phone-Conference offer an opportunity for students to meet informally with Mike Dearing to discuss current issues and trends in alternative
fuel and transportation, ways we might travel differently in
the future and why we need to look at a variety of solutions in energy use.
