Chris here, We’re on our way back from D-Fest in Tulsa, OK. I’m at the airport - flying to Denver for a few days, and Zach and Eric are out of gas somewhere on the freeway 20 min from here. It’s hot, but not in the airport. I’m sure they’re having a great time... Anyways, here’s the recap:
We had a GREAT time at D-Fest. D-Fest is a SXSW style music festival in Tulsa, OK. Not nearly as big as SXSW, but also not as commercial. It just seemed better to us. Better quality bands, better venues, nicer people.... we had a great time. We spent a few nights with Ken Abdo, our lawyer and also D-Fest’s Keynote speaker, and David Silbaugh from Summerfest, another awesome guy. We saw some AMAZING bands and want to give you the list of Catchpenny approved groups.
Seis Police - From Mexico. It’s like the Ramones, in Spanish, mixed with stand up comedy. Kids, wear your earmuffs. We loved them, though we’d never seen anything quite like it.
The Effects - These guys just rocked. Kinda looked like Wolfmother, but had a great melodic sense to their music. We randomly stumbled upon them and were blown away.
Crooked X - Imagine if your favorite 80’s hair metal band was zapped by a lazer and suddenly were 11-14 years old, but still played and sang like they were seasoned professionals. That’s crooked X...I swear their parents home school them and 5th hour is old Metallica videos. Check them out.
Absentstar - We were supposed to play a show with them last week, but had to cancel to go to Chicago to do the WGN Morning show. Anyways, we caught up with them, and they are great guys and musicians. Recently signed to Columbia and they just recorded an album in Minneapolis with Dan Wilson. We’re going to do a show with them real soon....
Flaming Lips - nothing new here. everyone knows about “the lips” as Tulsa calls them. We were in the front row, and pelted with confetti, balloons, water, and left just before we felt a contact high coming on....
We saw some other bands that were, well, kinda weird, but we’re not going to rip anyone on this site. Ken said it best “In all my years of seeing bands, this was BY FAR the strangest night I’ve ever had.”
Stay tuned for pictures (i forgot my camera cable) in a few days.
Chris
