Some plastics include Bisphenol A (BPA), a hormone-mimicking chemical. Will BPA in plastic water and baby bottles hurt us? The scientists are still debating this issue. The FDA says polycarbonate is safe. But questions still remain about whether or not BPA possibly could leach out of bottles at levels high enough to harm human health.
According to Anna Kuchment’s article, The Baby Bottle Blues on Newsweek.com, “Many popular brands of bottles and sippy cups, including Dr. Brown's and Avent, are made of polycarbonate.”
Bottles free of BPA are gaining popularity even though they can be more expensive. Whole Foods banned polycarbonate baby products and carries only BornFree bottles and cups. Target offers glass bottles by Evenflo and BPA-free plastic bottles from Medela.
