Congratulations Grizzlies. What a way to start league. As a whole, our program has made tremendous strides. All levels finished fifth place or higher (a school first) and our Varsity Boys and JV Boys both placed third (the highest a team has ever placed). Below you will find the team standings. The first third of the season is now complete. We have a lot of hard work left. Do work, stay focused, and have fun.

Girls:
Despite the fact that we lost all but six of our runners from last year (including our top two), you improved on our team time (combined times of the top five) by over five minutes. Last year our fifth girl ran 24 minutes. This year we had 13 girls under 24 minutes. Last year we were the 137th fastest team. This year we were the 106th fastest time. This improvement is just great. Once again Misty ran 10 minutes faster than she did last year. Kristine Alfaro and Michelle Bergstrom ran great in the JV and Soph races. Lauren became our highest finisher, and the fastest girl in school history with her seventh place, 1839 finish. Keep up the good work.
Boys:
Of the 24 boys who toed the line on Saturday, only nine had run here the year before, yet our performance was far faster than last year. Our team time, 81:31, was over three minutes faster than last year. In the freshman race, Danny Corillo started the day with a sith place finish in 16:49. Our soph boys then placed fourth in their race, and were the fifth fastest soph team of the morning session. Last year, our freshmen finished 14th against the same teams. Luc Schutz moved up from 99th place last year to 14th place this year. In the junior race, Seth Totten became the first Golden Valley runner to win a cross-country race. His time of 15:17 was the second fastest of the morning session, and the 54th fastest time of the day. Very impressive. In the senior race, Johnny Tapia ran our second fastest time of the day, 16:11.
In what may be the most impressive statistic of the day, the boys finished as the seventh fastest CIF Division III team of the day. The CIF divisions are determined by size of school. 37 Division III teams raced in both the morning and evening sessions, and only six of those schools beat us. Congratulations.
The Season Begins
Congratulations on our first race. We raced against some very tough competition, and ran very well. Last year our first varsity boy finished 20th, this year our fifth runner was 21st. Last year we only had two boys break 20 minutes. This year, on a similar course, we had 13 break 20 minutes. We saw similar improvements with the girls. A special congratulations to all the JV/SF girls who, because our directionally challenged bus driver, had only ten minutes to prepare for their race. We are looking very strong. All of our hard work is paying off.
Our next meet is at Woodbridge High School in Irvine. The course is flat and fast.
