My quiet times always take on a different look with the birth of a baby... truth comes in short bits here and there (usually while nursing), rather than through deep study first thing in the morning. But the wonderful thing about truth, is that no matter how short or long time is spent in it, there is sweet fruit nonetheless. Mr. Spurgeon has been my constant friend these past 6+ years of motherhood... I’ve found his writings perfect for a dose of needed reminders of God’s character and promises. After numerous readings of Beside Still Waters and Morning & Evening, this year I picked up his Cheque Book of the Bank of Faith. It has not disappointed... These words from his introduction, penned in 1893, ring true still...
“My brethren, God is good...
he will not forsake you: he will bear you through.
There is a promise prepared for your present emergencies;
and if you will believe and plead it at the mercy-seat through Jesus Christ,
you shall se the hand of the Lord stretched out to help you.
Everything else will fail, but His word never will...
May the Holy Spirit, the Comforter,
inspire the people of the Lord with fresh faith!
God is glorified when his servant’s trust Him implicitly.
We cannot be too much of children with our heavenly Father.
Our young ones ask no question about our will or our power,
but having once received a promise from father
they rejoice in the prospect of its fulfillment, never doubting...
May many readers, whom I may never see,
discover the duty and delight of such childlike trust in God...”
