In this range of framed work I hand pleat cotton fabric using threads to control and create the undulating surface of the piece before working into it with oil and pastels. I have taken this process; the first stage of smoking, usually used with open weave fabrics and applied it to a much tighter woven cotton creating a firm layered surface on which to work. Building up the colour on this surface I can use the shadows created by the pleats to add to the sense of depth and texture.
Taking my inspiration from landscapes and seascapes, my wall hangings and framed wall pieces are woven with wire, silk and other materials such as paper yarn and horsehair, using the structure of the weaving to produce textural, sculptural pieces. I am interested in the behaviour of materials in the construction of woven cloth.
