NOTE: HMTS stands for Her (or His) Majesty’s Telegraph Ship. This prefix is used for ships that were owned by the General Post Office (GPO) before 1969 when it ceased to be a British Government Department. Other cable laying ships are prefixed with CS which stands for Cable Ship. There have been many HMS Alerts but these are Royal Navy ships and should not be confused with the cable ships.
