GRAMMY WEEK 2008

We had a wonderful week in Los Angeles celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Grammy Awards. So much more goes on besides the handful of awards and performances on television. Here’s a quick recap of the week AND a link to our revised photo gallery with photos of us and many great artists from Peter Frampton to Bill Cosby to Aretha Franklin to the Grammy Jazz band comprised of amazingly talented high school students.

Tuesday, Feb. 5: GRAMMY SALUTE TO JAZZ

Bill Cosby MC’d this event that saluted McCoy Tyner and Sonny Rollins. Other performers included Jerry Lee Lewis (Great Balls of Fire).

Wednesday, Feb. 6: SOUNDS OF CHANGE

A GRAMMY look at how music has changed the world with both social/political content and new sounds. Our favorite artist there was a DJ named HAPA who combined spoken word soundbites with powerful music and his own artistry. We’re hoping to collaborate with him end of March.

Thursday, Feb. 7 – Our second day recording at Berkeley Studios for an upcoming project featuring our friend Michael Stein on vocals.

Friday, Feb. 8: MUSICARES HONORS ARETHA FRANKLIN

This evening was a giant fundraiser for MusiCares, part of the Grammy Foundation. MusiCares distributes funds to musicians who need financial assistance due to health or other unforeseen reasons. They have been very active in helping the post-Katrina music community. The fundraiser raised 4.5 MILLION dollars and Aretha was tributed all evening. Her performances were brilliant.

Saturday, Feb. 9: ALL DAY - LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

We started with a gathering of about 60 children’s musicians and followed that with the celebration of the new Cajun/Zydeco GRAMMY category. Then, off to a GRAMMY Town Hall meeting with members of Congress who support music and musician’s rights. In the evening, The Recording Academy gave Lifetime Achievement Awards to Earl Scruggs, Burt Bacharach, Doris Day and several others. Then off to the nominees reception and party.

Sunday, Feb. 10: THE BIG DAY -  C&M ARE PRESENTERS!

We arrived at the convention Center around noon to prepare for our debut as presenters in the GRAMMY pre-televised ceremony. Took a photo with Peter Frampton, met Patti Austin and read “AND THE GRAMMY GOES TO” ABOUT 15 TIMES.  Marcy wore a tuxedo and Cathy wore a chartreuse jacket. We read Barrack Obama’s win. Of course, he wasn’t there and we were quoted in the NY Times for saying, “He’s going to have to personally meet us to get it.” The papers claimed, “Obama beats Hillary”. Also gave the award for Best Children’s Recording to Ed Mitchell & Ted Kryczco’s “The Muppets Green and Red Christmas”, an excellent CD. Hats off to Bill Harley & Sweet Honey in the Rock for their nominations.

We sat in the 18th row in front of the stage at the TV Broadcast and loved every minute of it. Then, off to a celebration for Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records. Lionel Ritchie and Stevie Wonder did beautiful performances. Then off to the JAZZ room at the main party and then off to the hotel to pack for an early flight.

On the way home  we shot a quick  youtube video with Cathy’s cc mini Gold Tone Banjo in front of a police “Do Not Block Door”

So what’s next-

We go right back to work on 2 new studio projects of our own and work on a few with various friends, including Ysaye Barnwell of Sweet Honey in the Rock. Sunday night, Feb. 17, we lead the Ukulele Orchestra at Washington DC’s local “GRAMMY’s”, the WAMMY Awards.
