Grading policy:
Tests=50%(about 4 per term)
Labs (graded) =30%(about 8 -10 per term,
Low lab grade is dropped each term)
Lab Quizzes =10% (after most labs)
Homework(checked) = 10%
Lab make up and extra help time: Make up days
After School Tuesday
Make up policy : 1 week for labs Next day for tests
This course is intended for college bound students. It meets 5 Mods per week. Knowledge of algebra is essential as problem solving is an important part of the course. The main problem solving method will be dimensional analysis, which is taught at the start of the course. Lessons in this class are in the form of lectures, demonstrations, notes on the board, text readings, doing worksheets in class, laboratory exercises, review games etc. Laboratory exercises will include practical applications of chemistry, “classic” chemistry experiments and the “discovery “ approach.
Food and drink of any type is NOT allowed in any science classroom.
Each student is expected to take notes in class. Students are expected to come to class prepared with a pencil, note paper, a folder for handouts and a calculator. The calculator need only be an inexpensive ($10-$15) TI-30 X II S or other similar scientific calculator. This is a calculator that can perform exponential notation and log functions. (We personally don’t like the TI 34 II, it does not program for scientific notation)
In case of absence, students are responsible for getting the notes they missed, and all other make up work. The low lab grade is dropped each quarter, so 1 lab can be missed. After that, students need to make up any missed lab or receive a zero. Extra help and make up times are listed above.
Tests come from notes, the book, worksheets and labs. Each test is announced several days in advance. In each chapter, the Review Sheet contains questions of the type that will be on the test. If the student can do this paper, he or she should do fine on the test. Chemistry emphasizes problem solving, thinking, understanding and applying knowledge, not memorizing unrelated facts.
