I think that far too many short films try and grab the audience with a gimmicky joke. The story deals with flat characters and unfolds more like a setup and punch line, rather than a complete story. And why not? After all, short films don’t have the time to set up a complex drama and create the bond between an audience and the characters that most feature films do.
What I set out to accomplish with Beyond the Window is to try and tell that story. I wanted the audience to take a moment away from the relentless grind of commercial entertainment, or even stylistic art. I wanted them to take a step back and just observe a very real story of two teenagers coming of age. I set out to create a beautiful, simple story that captivates an audience. I think life in itself is a beautiful thing to observe and by taking a moment outside ourselves to try something new and see the world from a different view, we grow up.
This film is organic from its conception to production. Each creative detail was always answered by asking my heart what it felt. I hope these emotions resonate in the film and that as an audience; you can take a step back and see something beautiful.
