Experiential Tourism in

Nunatsiavut

The Canadian tourism experience in Nunatsiavut will be developed by the people of Nunatsiavut, in ways that “are culturally sensitive, economically viable, and sustainable” ( Fran Williams).

Stepping Stones is a series of community-based workshops to learn about how to develop and implement experiential tourism and product development that features “experiences from Nunatsiavut”.

Through learning together, taking part in experiences, telling our own stories, and engaging each other in conversations that matter, it is intended that new tourism business development opportunities will emerge.

Seeing the invisible through conversations that matter

“It’s never enough just to tell people about some new insight.  Rather, you have to get them to experience it in a way that evokes its power and possibility.  Instead of pouring knowledge into people’s heads, you need to help them grind a new set of eyeglasses so they can see the world in a new way.” - John Seely Brown, Seeing Differently:  Insights on Innovation (from The World Café book).

Stepping Stones is a series of workshops facilitated by Celes Davar of Earth Rhythms, a learning adventure company located in Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba.  Canada.  He is facilitating these workshops for Tourism Nunatsiavut, whose Tourism Director is Kristy Sheppard from Rigolet.  She is part of the resource team for the workshops, as is Anne Marceau from Parks Canada.  This three-person resource team is learning from the people in the five communities (Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville, Rigolet) about what their community inventory is, and what experiential tourism products may be possible to create for their ideal guests.  They are encouraging workshop participants to share what action steps they would like to see as a follow-up to the workshops.

Blogs from each community are revealing. Read about each community by learning from the blog.

Economic potential in Nunatsiavut includes its overall land base, forestry in Postville, small business sector, fisheries, and other areas.  Tourism is seen as a bright area, as a revenue producer.
