Burrs Breeze Past Lancers in Regular Season Finale
It was just another day at the office for the Burrs this past Saturday, as they treated the home folks to a whale of a performance on Senior Night. For the third time this season the Burrs’ point total soared into the sixties. With the division crown in the balance, the Burrs used a 42-point first half to seize control on their way to a resounding 62-7 victory.
Aside from a kneel down at the end of the first half, the Burrs scored on their other eight possessions. The offense flew past the Lancer defense for 476 total yards. Relying primarily on a staunch rushing attack the Burrs zoomed to 444 yards on the ground on 40 carries.
On just the sixth play of the game, senior quarterback Curtis Drake electrified the crowd with an easy as pie 66-yard scamper.
Trying not to let the offense outdo them, the defense got into the act on McDevitt’s first possession. Junior linebacker Dante Dickens nicely slid in from of a Lancer pass and went untouched for a 43-yard score.
On the Burrs’ next series, it took just two plays to find the end zone. This time senior running back Raymond Maples did the honors with a 23-yard gallop.
The Burrs would go on to score three more times in the first half. Senior running back Rob Hollomon added runs of 4 and 2 yards. Drake scored his second touchdown of the game when he tight-roped the left sidelines for 44 yards.
In the second half we got a glimpse of the future as three sophomores accounted for touchdowns. First, quarterback Kyle Heggs and wide receiver Andre Maddox connected on a 14-yard pass. Next, running back Brandon Hollomon scampered home on a 43-yard run. Capping the carnage was Heggs on zig-zagging 44-yard trot of his own.
In the game Drake rushed for 137 yards on just five carries. R. Hollomon added 77 yards on 10 carries, while little bro’ chipped in with 64 yards on 4 totes. Maples went for 57 yards on his 7 lugs.
Defensively, senior safety Haleem Hayward had an interception. Junior defensive back Kevin Johnson recovered a fumble that was forced by junior defensive tackle Dontae Lewis (5 tackles). Sacks were had by senior linebacker Jordan Culbreath and senior defensive end Artis Carroll. Sophomore linebacker Kevin Burns hustled for five solo second half stops. All total, the Burr defense held McDevitt to 93 total yards, as twenty-five different Burrs were in on tackles.
With the victory the Burrs finished (4-0) in the Philadelphia Catholic League AA division. In these games they outscored their opponents by a whopping 239-to-26.
Next week the Burrs will begin their quest for a state championship with a PCL 2A semifinal game against Kennedy-Kenrick. Three weeks ago West toppled the Wolverines 50-0 in game played in Norristown. The site and date of this game has not yet been set. Make sure you check the site throughout the week to get information on this. The Burrs can use all of the support they can get. Moving forward it would be great to see as many people out at the games as possible. The Burrs offer an exciting brand of football that is sure to keep you entertained from start to finish.
