Burrs Make Quick Work of Wolverines
For the second time this season, the explosive West offense eclipsed the 50-point barrier and amassed more than 500 total yards from scrimmage. Before the first quarter had ended West had already scored four touchdowns. And when halftime arrived, the score had swelled to a commanding 43-0 West lead. All total, they accumulated 511 yards of offense in the 50-0 win.
It just wasn’t the offense that shined either, as the Burr defensive unit stymied an undermanned Wolverine offense throughout. The defense did not allow a first down and yielded a mere -14 yards of offense. K-K’s longest offensive play, a pass, went for just six yards.
In the first quarter West would score three touchdowns on consecutive plays. First, sophomore tight end Jim lynch turned his first varsity reception into a 17-yard score from senior quarterback Curtis Drake. Next, Drake connected with senior wide receiver Eric Young on a lovely 69-yard wheel route down the right sideline for another score. This was followed by a 35-yard sprint by senior running back Rob Hollomon, which made the score 22-0 West.
Later, and with just 4 seconds remaining in the opening stanza, senior running back Raymond Maples bulled across from 14 yards to make the score 29-0.
In the second quarter, R. Hollomon and Maples each added 35-yard scoring runs. With the score now 43-0, the second half was played under mercy rule conditions and a running clock.
At the start of the second half, the Burr second and third strong units began to see some action. Though, the faces may have changed, the theme remained the same, as these units continued to pile up the yardage. A seventh and final touchdown was scored by sophomore running back Brandon Hollomon on a 5-yard run.
In the game, ten different rushers carried the rock. Leading the way were Maples (11-119) and R. Hollomon (7-74), Drake added 26 yards on 4 carries, and passed 3-for-4, for another 127 yards. Also chipping in was; B. Hollomon (3-41, sophomore fullback Leroy Wesely (4-50), and sophomore tailback Lamont Davis (5-41). All total, West rang up 384 yards on the ground.
Head Coach Brian Fluck received solid play on the line of scrimmage from every offensive lineman that saw action. Meanwhile, sophomore fullback Anthony McDonnaugh did a great job in filling in for senior Juan Rozier, who was unavailable.
On defense, junior defensive backs Ray Manuel (4 tackles) and Kaheem Summerville made interceptions. Junior linebacker Bill Tobin recovered a fumble. Junior linebacker Dante Dickens and senior defensive tackle Dwyane Shaw spilt a sack. Junior defensive tackle John Ruppert was a force along the line of scrimmage, and made two tackles for losses. McDonnaugh also contributed four solo tackles. For the game 13 of K-K’s 19 rushing attempts went for zero or negative yards.
West has now won three straight games. Next week, they will continue league play with a game versus Cardinal Dougherty. The Cardinals (0-6) have struggled so far this season. West main focus will be trying to enhance the momentum they have begun to develop over the last few weeks. The game is slated for 1 o’clock on Saturday, at Germantown.
