WEST CATHOLIC 64, CARDINAL DOUGHERTY 7

BURRS TURN CARDINALS BLUE
There is little doubt that the busiest member of Germantown Stadium’s staff this past Saturday afternoon was the scoreboard operator. For the second time in a month the explosive Burrs illuminated the scoreboard to the tone of 60+ points. This week it was Cardinal Dougherty who fell victim to the machine known as West Catholic football, as the surging Burrs pummeled the Cardinals, 64-7.
West scored four of their seven first half touchdowns in the opening quarter on their way to a commanding 49-0 halftime lead.
Though the Burrs attempted just sixteen plays in the opening half, they scored on six of them, and rang up 306 yards of offense. Senior running back Rob Hollomon opened the scoring with a 3-yard run. From here the Burrs would never look back.
Later in the opening quarter R. Hollomon would display the skills that make him a top flight defensive back in the Catholic League. A split second after a Dougherty receiver made a reception in the flat he was met by R. Hollomon, who blasted him, thus, jarring the ball loose. Senior linebacker Devir Moody easily scooped up the rock and walked in from 23 yards out.
Late in the half R. Hollomon would score his second touchdown on a 48-yard sprint down the right sideline. His backfield teammate senior Raymond Maples would also visit the end zone on a pair runs. His touchdowns went for 1 and 39 yards. All together this duo racked-up 194 rushing yards on just ten carries. Is there a better tandem in these parts? Show me!
Senior quarterback Curtis Drake wasn’t asked to throw much, but when he did the dividends were significant. Drake only attempted and completed three passes, but two of them went for scores. First, he found senior wide receiver Brandon Williamson down the middle of the field for 35 yards. Next, he connected with senior wide receiver Eric Young on a 26-yard scoring play.
For the game, West rolled to 411 yards of total offense. In the second half junior running back Kaheem Summerville (3-22) and sophomore Lamont Davis scored on one-yard runs. Sophomore running back Brandon Hollomon chipped in with 47 yards on 8 carries.
Through seven games this season the mighty Burr offense has scored exactly 300 points and accumulated nearly 3,000 yards in offense. Further proving that the West offense is one of the more explosive and dynamic units in just not the Catholic League, but all of Southeastern PA.
Defensively, the Burrs forced four three-and-outs and three turnovers on Dougherty’s first seven possessions. Interceptions were had by senior safety Haleem Hayward and junior cornerback Ray Maunel. The Burr front seven was in the Dougherty backfield early and often. Sophomore linebacker Anthony McDonnaugh led the defense with five tackles.
Believe it or not, but next week the Burrs wrap up the regular season portion of their schedule with a first-place tussle with Bishop McDevitt. The game is set for Saturday night at 7:30, at Widener’s Quick Stadium.
