Burrs’ Defense Blasts Wolverines in Easy Win
Before the West Catholic offense even took snap this past Friday night, the defense had already staked the team to a two touchdown lead. Ultimately, the defense would be squarely responsible for three touchdowns, as the Burrs throttled the Wolverines, 62-0, in a game played at Widener’s Quick Stadium.
After West had muffed a punt to give K-K prime real estate, junior linebacker Anthony McDonnaugh restored order when he intercepted a pass at the 18-yard line and then bobbed and weaved his way to an 82-yard touchdown.
Then, on K-K’s next offensive play, senior defensive tackle John Ruppert erupted through the line to force a fumble. After the ball was kicked around a little, junior defensive end Jim Lynch finally pounced on it in the end zone giving West a 14-0 lead.
From here the offense would take over and before the first half was finished they would put four more touchdowns on the board.
In the final seconds of the first half, senior quarterback Jarred Evans (4-for-4, 67 yards) would find junior wide receiver Jaelen Strong-Rankin on an 18-yard fade pass. Later, the second quarter would produce three more West scores, as junior running back Joshua Mathis sandwiched a pair of scoring runs (39 & 14 yards) around an 8-yard touchdown run by junior running back Brandon Hollomon.
With the score 41-0 at the intermission, Head Coach Brian Fluck emptied the bench in the second half and gave some of back-ups a chance to play significant minutes.
Senior running back Kaheem Summerville (7-109) was responsible for the next two touchdowns on runs of 3 and 70 yards. Then, with time running out, junior defensive back Kevaughn Gayle intercepted a pass and returned in 32 yards for the final Burr touchdown.
The defense held K-K to just 28 yards of offense on 43 total plays. Ruppert was a force all night, as all seven of his stops went for losses (29 yards). He forced two fumbles and notched 1.5 sacks. Lynch had a half-of-sack. Senior Dante Dickens recovered a fumble. Junior linebacker Kevin Burns made five tackles, while McDonnaugh, junior defensive back Leroy Wesley, and sophomore linebacker Tristin Freeman were next with four stops apiece.
Offensively, the Burrs accumulated 338 yards on just 27 offensive plays. Mathis racked up 105 yards on just 8 carries. Hollomon added 38 yards on three totes. Strong-Rankin and junior wide receiver Quran Kent each made a pair of catches. Senior kicker Tim Carroll made 8-of-9 extra points.
Next week, the Burrs will continue league play when they host Cardinal Dougherty. The game is once again slated for Widener University. Game time is 7:30 on Friday night.
