West Catholic Game Summary
10-16-09
West Catholic 57, Cardinal Dougherty 19
Burrs Survive Scare from Cardinals
On paper West entered Friday night’s game against Cardinal Dougherty as heavy favorites, but with all but four seconds of the first quarter clock expired, West trailed a game bunch Cards, 19-7. A muffed punt and fumble led to a pair of Dougherty scores early. Then, after a 63-yard scoring run by the Dougherty quarterback, West had to be thinking to themselves, what are we in store for tonight?
Fortunately, junior wide receiver Quran Kent was able to do his best Houdini act on the kickoff following Dougherty’s third touchdown. On a play that began harmlessly, Kent slipped his way out of multiple tackle attempts and eventually scooted down the right-sideline for a 75-yard touchdown. This helped restore a little order and ultimately propelled the Burrs to fifty consecutive points to end the game.
Though, the Burrs only lead by a single point at halftime, they put forth a dominant second half on both sides of the ball, and rolled to a convincing 57-19 victory.
Junior running back Brandon Hollomon scored three of his four touchdowns in an explosive third quarter. After scoring on a 6-yard run in the second quarter, Hollomon added scoring runs of 36, 17, and 21 yards. Junior linebacker Kevin Burns provided the fourth Burr score of the quarter when he cleanly blocked a punt and then out-fought all pursuers for the recovery in the end zone.
By the time the third quarter had ended, a slim one-point lead would swell to a convincing thirty-point advantage, 49-19.
Senior running back Kaheem Summerville (5-40) would close out the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 4-yard run.
It took the Burrs’ offense a while to get rolling, but in the end they still were able to produce 388 yards of offense. Senior quarterback Jarred Evans passed 7-for-12, for 142 yards and added an early 1-yard touchdown run. Hollomon (8-135) rushed for 128 of his yards in the second half. He finished with 179 all-purpose yards. Kent ended with 201 all-purpose yards, including 85 yards on three receptions.
Defensively, the Burrs limited the Cardinals to zero first downs and minus-28 yards of offense in the second half. Dougherty’s last ten possessions resulted in punts, with nine of them coming on three-and-outs.
Leading the charge on defense was junior defensive end Jim Lynch who made seven tackles and a sack. Six of his stops resulted in losses that accumulated 26 yards. Senior defensive tackle Jake Zuzek made four of his five stops behind the line of scrimmage and had a sack. Senior linebacker Dante Dickens was in on 7 total tackles (Sack, 2 TFL’s) and blocked a punt. Also chipping in were Burns will five tackles and sophomore defensive back Kevin Malone (2 pass defends) with four. Junior defensive back Lamont Davis provided three pass defends. For the game the Burrs limited the Cardinals to 120 yards on 47 plays.
Next week, West will travel to play Bishop McDevitt. The Lancers currently sit with an undefeated record. Both teams are (3-0) in league play, so a regular season title will be on the line. The Burrs have defeated McDevitt over the last seven regular seasons and eight times overall. Their average margin of victory has been, 38-7. This McDevitt team is playing well and promises to give West their toughest league fight in some time. The game is slated for Saturday night at Cheltenham High School. Start time is 7 o’clock.
