Known for its live movement based theatre with strong visual element, First Bite productions and workshops, under the artistic direction of Freda O’Byrne, were designed to give the audience a heightened sense of contact with the performers, and to enable and encourage them to use their interpretive and evaluative skills. The company worked in partnership with a range of angencies from the voluntary and statutory sectors to ensure that all programmes accurately reflected the changing needs of young people and their teachers.

Throughout its 13 year history the company created 14 original movement based theatre in education programmes which involved over 385,000 young people from North West England and Central Scotland. In addition, First Bite carried out extensive outreach work including Special Needs drama programmes, Youth Theatres, rural drama projects in remote areas of Scotland, work with young offenders and young people in care, and the three year ArtsSpeke Project.
