Rebecca has been involved in Youth Arts for most of her life. Her first professional work was in North America and involved the running of annual summer drama programmes for 300 young people between the ages of 8 and 12.
Whilst in America, Rebecca was awarded a scholarship to study at the Educational Centre for the Arts in Connecticut which was followed by three years at London’s Middlesex University where she studied music, dance and drama, gaining a 2’1 Performing Arts Honours Degree.
Together with fellow graduate, Artistic Director, Freda O’Byrne, Rebecca set up and ran Edinburgh and Liverpool based First Bite Theatre in Education Company which, throughout its 13 year history worked with 385,000 young people in schools, youth clubs and other outreach settings.
In 2001 Rebecca left First Bite Theatre in Education Company to pursue a freelance career as a drama director and teacher. She continues to run the two First Bite Youth Theatres and has also been a regular tutor and associate artist for Scottish Youth Theatre (SYT), running classes in Edinburgh and outreach workshops throughout Scotland over a number of years. Also for SYT, Rebecca has co-directed a number of performance projects at Stirling's MacRobert Arts Centre, and at the King’s and Festival Theatres in Edinburgh. In 2005 she directed “Into the Light” at the Tramway Theatre in Glasgow as part of SYT’s five week summer festival.
Other work has involved drama workshops with young people in care from the Fife area in association with the Fife Social Work and Education Departments, and with work with young people from Edinburgh and Glasgow in partnership with Save the Children and Children in Scotland as part of the National Education Debate.
