MICHAEL GIBSON
SELECTED WORKS (2001-2007)
ATLANTA- The Fay Gold Gallery is pleased to present Selected Works (2001-2007) by Atlanta artist Michael Gibson. Gibson makes large, richly colored abstract paintings of carefully arranged patterns which float within a shiny enameled picture plane. Recalling a counter culture when abstraction was romantically associated with utopianism, the artist’s investigation into the presumed escapist rhetoric of psychedelic forms implies a breadth of historic references ranging from Clifford Still and Andy Warhol to Steve Reich and artist KAWS. Gibson is interested in the paintings' ability to simultaneously conceal and reveal. He manipulates the visual reality of a picture transporting the viewer into the compositional field while openly revealing the mechanics of this visual seduction. The works thus become mirrors and windows at the same time.
Gibson has selected works for the show dating from 2001 to 2007 to evidence how progressive energy and internal geometry has evolved in his work systematically as in a language. Gibson has exhibited widely in both group and solo shows throughout the U.S. including "Painting as Paradox" at Artists Space in New York, Pattern Memory at Newman Popiashvili Gallery in New York, and at Artissima in Torino.
