A directed performance by Michael Gibson with invited NY sound artist, Ian Epps.

Participant: Speed Culture will feature a live speed chess game within a specific sound environment. In this directed performance Gibson investigates how the mind recalls memory by means of pattern recognition- a concept he has explored in his painting since 2002.
Gibson also folds into the discussion, the cause and effect of speed on contemporary culture for both artist and viewer. Gibson highlights this by directing the players to use the classic duration of a speed chess game (10 minutes). In limiting the time each player has to complete each move, participants depend on quick memory recognition, of both present and past games, in order to engage and respond to each move.
Epps' digital time based sound work, titled Audiophone, explores the idea of pattern memory by targeting specific sounds which linger in memory while others dissipate. Epps has isolated certain sounds that have a lasting impression and removed parts that have not. Within a sound experience like chess (or any other activity), the filter of perceptibility of important events trigger pattern memories--setting the mind in motion.
The players in this performance are speed chess players, from Atlanta's Woodruff park and have been hired by the artist for this exhibition.
