news from the lake

yesterday i got lost. now if you knew where i am staying at this lake in wisconsin, you would wonder how on earth i could get lost. after all, the nearest town is a mere 5 minutes away (which includes only ONE turn!)... and yet i am still capable of getting lost!

so there i was in birchwood, a town of about 7.5 people, picking up a bag of ice and looking for birchwood sweatshirts for my kids, when i began heading back to the cabin. i opted to blow off the use of my GPS because it’s just one turn. how hard could it be?

apparently, harder than you think. after about 10 minutes of driving down a road, i was not noticing anything familiar. so i selected our cabin on the GPS only to find that i was going in the absolute opposite direction! somehow, some way, i had managed to turn in the wrong direction, making a trip of 10 minutes roundtrip, a trip that took about an hour and a half!

after that exciting adventure, the parents all headed out to partake in an amazingly wonderful wisconsin delicacy: fried cheese curds. seriously, there are few things that taste quite as incredible, especially when seated at the “chit chat,” a local hang out that is simply part of the experience of being here!

the chit chat rocks! its walls are adorned with myriad taxidermied specimens (some of which are labeled “roadkill” on their engraved metal tags!)... a ceiling displaying 249 beer steins... a pool table... and several arcade games, all of which are hunting or fishing games... what a fun place to hang out and... well, chit chat! :)

in other news... at last, i am “on the board” at the lake with a fish to my credit. a fish that put up such a fight that i thought i was reeling in some weeds and not the scaly killer that i actually ended up bringing in! needless to say, i gave freddy the fish back to the lake he came from in spite of lexi’s pleas to keep and eat him! (we’d already made the dads filet a miniscule specimen brought in by leighton yesterday... i couldn’t do that to them again!)

photo note: i have no cord to get the lake pics onto the computer, so i’m posting an oldie from last week of emily nursing her baby doll. ha!
