I began this series of paintings in 2002 while an artist in residence at the J. Llorens Artigas Foundation near Barcelona, Spain. A stroll along La Rambla, the main street frequented by tourists in Barcelona, prompted me to respond to the beauty and vulnerability of the large selection of caged birds sold by the street vendors.
