24 hours of summer solstice

‘I am built for this.’

That’s my mantra. It’s what I tell myself, even if it may not be true, to keep pedalling through gut-busting thigh-ripping conditions as part of a 24-hour mountain bike relay team. It’s the 24 hours of Summer Solstice, a hugely popular event run at Albion HIlls conservation area.

Truth is, at my age, I can only build for an event like this through diligent training and this year, I realized I wasn’t built for this event. I eeked out three laps on a borrowed bike. We all survived, and finished solidly in the middle of the pack. It’s a test, really, and about all I took away from it was a good technical ride on the third lap.

Our team, the Heebie-Jeebies has been doing this for close to a decade, and with kids in tow and serious time demands we all felt especially challenged. I will try to build up again for next year.http://www.chicoracing.com/html/index.phpshapeimage_2_link_0
