SouthSide Works Uncovered

Considering I work twelve hours on weekend days getting to events to review, attend, or even just support an organization such as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is always fun.  I started this one out by coming from work racing down 376 towards the Squirrel Hill Tunnels because it was sunny where I was (not to mention I leave work at 7pm and that’s when the event started), and I figured I was going to have to fight through the traffic and pedestrians at SouthSide Works to get over to my apartment and get changed so I would look like a human again.   Little did I know (actually I did know - I remembered to check out the weather radar before leaving work) what was to greet me at the end of the tunnels ... a scene that looked like it was cut out of “The Day After Tomorrow”.   I watched a wall of water release out of a shelf cloud (along with some very large lightning bolts) directly above where Uncovered was taking place.   Considering I noticed the trees bend from the wind levels in front of the downpour, I figured that sound shell for the bands, beer truck, etc had all been blown into disarray.
When I got down to Cinema Drive, everything was wet, but still in good condition.  I assumed everything had moved into the theatre.  After cleaning up and changing into new clothes, my girlfriend and I walked over to Uncovered.  It was good to see that the event was already recovering and LLS had not given up.   The food was being brought back out, the beer and wine flowing again, and the sound man was getting the gear dried off and powered back up for the bands.   I did notice a few bets being placed on the side as to whether the sound guy was going to light up like a Christmas tree whenever he flipped the switch ... hmm, I wonder if any profits were donated from that.
The event had allot of fun giveaways, a wonderful acoustic performance lead in, and a great performance by Margot B.   Hanging out in Cinema Drive even after a hard rain, listening to music, and saying hello to a few friends was just the perfect end to a weekend (or a start to it if you were going out that night).  It also proved, no matter what happens, groups like the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society never give up or give in, and end up saving lives - so support them.

Special thanks to Katie Berger for pulling the event together, and re-pulling it together again after the downpour.  I’m still trying to figure out how she stayed dry.
