Tour of Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park

Sunday, 13 April 2008

Sacramento, California

10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Our next Chapter meeting will feature “The Life and Times of Alexander Hamilton Willard” (12 April) and a field trip to Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park (13 April).

Our gathering on 12 April will be held in the Wackford Community & Aquatic Complex located at 9014 Bruceville Road, in Elk Grove, California.  Elk Grove is located about 15 miles southeast of Sacramento (see locator maps below).

On 12 April we will have a speaker program involving three guest speakers.  Speakers include Karen Seaberg, President of the LCTHF, who will give us an update on our Foundation from a national perspective and Karen Willard who is a recognized expert on Alexander Hamilton Willard.  Karen was a contributor to Larry E. Morris’s book The Fate of the Corps and is a direct descendant of Alexander.  The Elk Grove Historical Society will also be on hand to present a glimpse into what life was like in Elk Grove when Alexander lived there.

The life of Alexander Hamilton Willard (1778-1865) encompassed an adventurous and significant record of participation in several epic phases of American history.  Between the time of his birth in the middle years of the War for American Independence and his death in the Sacramento Valley during the last weeks of the American Civil War he lived a full and active life in the varied roles of soldier, explorer, Indian-fighter, pioneer farmer, and overland immigrant to California in the Gold Rush years. (Sacramento County Historical Society, Vol. 5, No. 2, January 1959.)

Also on the 12th,  drawings for door prizes and the two winners of the Peace and Friendship blankets will be held.  After the presentations and a social period, which will include a potluck sponsored by the Elk Grove Historical Society, visits to Alexander’s grave-site and Elk Grove’s Heritage Park will take place.  This includes a visit to the Elk Grove Hotel and Stage Stop Museum built in 1850/1851.   That evening, there will be a no host group dinner at a local restaurant.

On the next day (13 April) a tour of Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park, located in midtown Sacramento, is being planned (see locator map below).  There we will receive a presentation on western expansion after the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the role played by Sutter’s Fort.

A flyer for this event may be obtained by clicking here.  The agenda for both days may be obtained by clicking here.  A site locator map showing the locations of the various sites we will be visiting, as well as some local hotels and their phone numbers, may be obtained by clicking here.

We plan to begin our program on the 12th at 9 AM, have a potluck lunch and social period, and then begin visits to Elk Grove’s Heritage Park, Alexander’s grave-site, and a community park recently dedicated in Alexander’s honor at 2 PM.  Tours will be completing by 4:45 PM.  The no-host group dinner will begin at 6 PM.

The Sutter’s Fort presentation and tour on the 13th is from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.  We will assemble at the entrance to the Fort at 9:45 AM and begin the presentation promptly at 10:00 AM.  Afterwards, there will be a no host lunch at Bernardo’s, a local restaurant within walking distance of the fort.

40th Annual Meeting

10-13 August 2008

Great Falls, Montana

The Foundation’s 40th annual meeting, “Tracing the Journey: Maps as Metaphors”,  will be held 10-13 August 2008 in Great Falls, Montana.

Using the maps of Lewis and Clark as metaphors for the many stories of the trail and the expedition, the Foundation's 40th Annual Meeting will trace the journeys of the Native Americans, our struggle to identify the expedition route by examining two hotly contested theories on the location of the Two Medicine fight site, and the creation and growth of the trail and the Foundation.  Our past presidents will also be honored at the meeting.  To obtain a brochure containing the most current agenda click here.

Additional details will be provided in The Orderly Report and on the Foundation’s website when available.  You may also contact the Foundation at (888) 701-3434.  Online registration can be performed on the Foundation’s website beginning in March 2008.  Click here if you wish to do so.
