Expectation

Fluency

3.3 read appropriate text with expression and confidence, adjusting reading strategies and reading rate to match the form and purpose

Student generated definitions:

Appropriate text: Just right

Text: novel, poetry, factual text, brochure, scripts.

Expression: pauses at periods and commas, voice goes up at a question mark, louder, faster or slower to add meaning.

Student Friendly Target

I know that when I read aloud I need to:

  1. read with expression by changing my voice

  2. when I read the key phrases and words

  3. pause at periods and commas

  4. my voice goes up when I read a question mark

  5. when I read an exclamation mark I read louder and with more feeling

  6. read with fewer pauses and try not to repeat words - it should sound like talking

I know that when I read fiction text it sounds like a story. To make it sound even better I could change my voice when characters are talking (whatever is written inside the quotation marks).

I know that when I read factual text I have to read clearly and read sub-titles and captions.

Success Criteria

q I was able to read the text and knew most of the words

q I changed my voice when I came to an important part

q I made short pauses when I came to a comma

q I made longer pauses when I read a period

q I read louder and with more feeling when I read an exclamation mark

q I made the text sound like I was talking and not reading

I know that if I only checked 2 or 3 of the 5 boxes above I need to:

q Pick an easier text

q Re-read the text a few times to feel more comfortable with the words

q I need to use more strategies to solve unknown words

My goal is:
