The word "missional" is everywhere. But what does it mean? Is it another way of saying "seeker-focused" or "purpose-driven"? Alan Hirsch here helps us understand the term...

Will the Church that is NOT 'Missional' Please Stand Up?
My friend Tim Conder has an article on Leadership blog Out of Ur called Missional Buzz. He says . .
"Today, it would be almost impossible for “the real missional church” to stand up. Yes, there are plenty of imposters, but there’s no one true example to play the day’s mystery guest. And any panel of celebrities probably wouldn’t accept the outcome.
So many fellowships that once boldly self-identified as cell churches, meta-churches, house churches, seeker-style, or purpose-driven now claim to be missional. It’s such a buzzword that it’s fair to ask, “Is there really any such thing as a missional church?” Although some use the term glibly, I believe the answer is “yes.” "

AUGUST 26th 2008 A tremendous couple of days...
Leadership Network has formed of a series of Leadership Communities for innovative churches whose leaders are thinking differently about what church could be and even should be. Our Team has the joy of attending this special conversation last week.
At my home church, FBC McKinney www.fbcmckinney.com we are clearly moving from being internally preoccupied to externally focused, from primarily focusing on institutional maintenance to developing an incarnational influence. We now find ourselves thinking of kingdom impact more than church growth and are thinking of the church as a catalyst to mobilize all of the community, not just their church, to work on the big things God cares about.
We are seeking to change the scorecard for what is measured and valued for the church.
We recognize that every domain of our culture is undergoing profound metamorphosis in its way of being and doing, from healthcare to education to arts and entertainment to the business sector. Dramatically increased levels of education, technology, and wealth are elevating the potential for many human beings to shape their response to the world.
At the same time unprecedented numbers of people live in poverty, experience hunger, wrestle with disease and suffer from mal-education. It’s a new era, a new reformation. It’s daunting but so very exciting...

This is for the missional entrepreneurs working in continental Europe. GloboChrist: The Great Commission Takes a Postmodern Turn, by Carl Raschke. Get it from UK's Eden or Amazon if you in the USA.
Apparently, the book sums up the postmodern European challenge and the church's response better than anything out there right now.

Let's face it - the word "missional" has become a junk-drawer word. You know what a junk-drawer is - that drawer in your bedroom or desk that just gets all sorts of rubbish thrown in it. G.K. Chesterton once said something to the effect that if you don't believe in anything, then you'll believe everything. The reverse is true for the word "missional." If it comes to mean everything and anything, then soon (if not already) it will mean nothing.
This Summer, more than 50 bloggers will blog in response to this one question - "What is missional?" Rick Meigs, who founded the Friend of Missional site, has called for something akin to a Missional Blog-fest in order to reclaim the term "missional" - primarily because of it has become a junk-drawer word - overly and wrongly used.
I'm in. If you'd like to join in on the Missional Blog-fest click on one of the names below...
