Combining Modern with Prairie esthetics results in a spare beauty at home in any neighborhood.
Below is the same basic design with a still more Modernist flair. Both of these are under 2000 sf.
Here we have a 2-story Modernist design with a very functional plan including 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, and a den or guest bedroom. At 2400 sq. ft., it is designed to be affordable too.
The layout was driven by a rocky hillside site with spectacular views, so there is no basement and the main living areas are on the upper floor.
The Neo-Prairie below was designed to allow a side-approach garage on a narrow subdivision lot with an expansive view down the hill to the rear and a walkout basement.
Designed for efficient simplicity, this modernist cottage puts the focus on views to the lake.
Simplicity of design allows for more money to be spent on quality materials.
This cottage was designed for an extremely small site on an island.
In 800 square feet we have 3 bedrooms, kitchen, bath, and a cathedral living room.
In “Plane House” the tall living room is lit by high clerestory windows all around, and capped with a roof that seems to float in space.
In “Box House” below, the design concept expresses a series of stacked multi-color boxes.
With 2300 sf of living space the house offers a cathedral living room, 4 bedrooms and 3 baths plus a large rec room and laundry. A generous 30-foot deck tops off the exterior.
The split-level below adopts Wright’s Prairie-School esthetic. It offers 3 bedrooms, a game room & two living rooms in 2600 square feet plus basement.
In “Wall House” the emphasis is on expressing pure vertical planes which extend through the house and intersect in interesting ways, forming rooms in the quadrants.
Full-height corner windows allow walls to appear as discrete planes, instead of the usual “box with holes in it” design effect.
The 3000 sf home below looks out over a beautiful lake. Large windows capture light and views. Kids have their 2 bedrooms upstairs, while the master suite is on the main level.

The raised ranch below also features a lower level garage, rec room and bedroom, with the main living areas on the upper floor. The hillside site allows a grade-level door at the rear kitchen.
This efficient plan includes a 2-car garage and offers 2 bedrooms, living, dining & kitchen in 850 square feet, but it is readily expandable for a larger family.
