A Brown Shoe’s Views

So you may be asking what is this site is all about.  Well, it’s about a lot of things.  First, it’s about one sailor’s thoughts and experiences, a “brown shoe’s” to be exact.  The term “brown shoe” in Navy lingo, while originally applied to to pilots or “naval aviators”, now refers to any officer or chief petty officer whose job specialty resides within the naval aviation community.  Just to be clear, I am not a naval aviator - I ‘m an Aerospace Maintenance Duty Officer, an AMDO for short (or “greenshirt” in Navy lingo) in the Navy Reserves.  Those of you familiar with AMDO’s  may be asking “So why didn’t I name this site “A Greenshirt’s Views” or something to that effect?  Here’s where you expect a really good sea story.  In reality the answers are far simpler - 1.  It’s not as catchy as “A Brown Shoe’s View and  2. The “Greenshirt” and “AMDO” screen names were already taken in the .mac service (sorry to bust your bubble).

But as a reservist, the Navy is not my regular job (I call it my “irregular” job).  Actually, I’m a Software Engineer for The Boeing Company so there’s a little bit of stuff in here about technology as well (software development, gadgets, general computer geek stuff and more).  If you’re really into gadgets and technology like I am, check put my favorite Podcast series at GeekBrief.tv.  The Podcasts are also available for free in HD on iTunes.

And finally, I also pay homage to one of my favorite past times  - restoring old warbirds.  Most of my time in this regard is spent at the Lone Star Flight Museum in Galveston, Texas on a volunteer basis.  As you can see, my plate is full.  So if you’re interested, keep reading.  Just be sure to drink a heavily caffeinated beverage and pop a couple of no-doze before you continue.

"I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: 'I served in the United States Navy.”

President John F. Kennedy
