Microscope enhanced dentistry

Microscopes have arrived to dentistry! Viewing teeth at extreme magnification brings details to life that might otherwise be hidden from the naked eye. The most recent report published showed that 0.8% of general dentists use a microscope. So why do I choose to use it for all of my procedures? Look at the photos above and you tell me if you see a difference. The photos are all of the same object at the different levels of magnification offered by a microscope. The smallest photo is similar to the most commonly used magnification level of loupes (magnifying glasses) used by dentists. This magnification level is about 2.5X. The highest level of magnification on my microscope is about 18X. Did you know that the statue of liberty is 20X normal size? Quite a bit more to see at that super size, don’t you think?
